Elder statesman, ATAHUALPA, shows way

Delta Downs, Thur Feb24-05, Race Ten, 4-1/2f, 4yo & up, nw2r>Aug24-04

ATAHUALPA, bay gelding, bred 10Apr-94, by Justo Fernandez, in Ky.
(FERDINAND-Pleasant Sue by Pleasant Colony)

mastered a field of eight sprinters, he being the eldest runner at age eleven,
fighting for the early pace, pulling away to win the abbreviated sprint by
2-1/2 lengths. He was the lukewarm 2-1 fave, and paid 6.20.

Note the balanced pedigree:
classic winners on both sides of ped. The number of sons of Ferdinand
have dwindled down to a precious few, but those remaining can
still find the winner's circle from time to time.

TREE THE CAT, dk b/br mare,00,[Ky], bred by Marvin Little,Jr
(CAT'S CAREER-Tree Hen by Our Native)

away from the races since being haltered by current owner/trainer Angela M Ingenito for $5,000 (28Oct-04) in her racing debut at CT, where she finished a dull sixth in a field of nine, TREE THE CAT rallied from far back to finish second, beaten three lengths by the even-money favorite, Little Bodgit. She carried highweight of 121, conceding five pounds to the winner.

Dosage: 12-2-13-0-1; DI: 2.73; CD: 0.86

Crosses: Raise A Native, 3 x 4; Northern Dancer, 4 x 4; Polynesian, 5 x 5.

This mare did not begin racing until October of her 4yo year, and appears to like longer distances. Should be right there against maiden fillies at 1M-1/16, or longer. Turf potential, as do all Excellers.

6f, 3yo Texas-bred Maidens

SPEARSVILLE, bay colt, Apr 02, [TX],
(Petionville-FANCY FORBES by FERDINAND)

came to life on the turn while three-wide, rallied to
get up for second at 25-1, behind the winner who went
off at even longer odds of 48-1. SPEARSVILLE was beaten only
a length, and should improve off that tightener.

Coupled with an 18-1 shot running third, plus a dead-heat for
fourth, one of which was the 4-5 favorite, created some monster payouts.

Winner paid 99.00
SPEARSVILLE paid 35.00, and 20.40

KING MAXIMUS hits gate, rallies at 12 furlongs

Gulfstream Park, Feb11-05, Race Ten, Alw, 1-1/2 miles (turf)

KING MAXIMUS, b, g,01,(Ky) (King of Kings[Ire]-EXCEDENT by EXCELLER)
HIT THE GATE, steadied going into first turn, bided his time and swung out for the drive, finishing a very respectable fourth in the twelve furlong grass test.

The 4yo is very lightly raced. He started his career in Europe and broke his maiden as a 2yo, at Lingfield (U.K.) in his second start (One Mile,Dirt, by 1-1/4 lengths, 2Nov-03).

He made his American debut at Belmont Park (21May-04) at nine furlongs on the grass, rallying to finish second in a field of ten claimers in for a tag of $50k. He did not race again until 10Nov-04, this time at Aqueduct, where he ran a dull seventh of nine versus allowance company at nine furlongs.

With five life starts (four on turf), look for this one in longer races. He is trained by Christophe Clement for Merrylegs Farm.

ROCK HARD SAFE one to watch

ROCK HARD SAFE,
ch, colt, 02[IN], (FAST FERDIE-Hoosier Mama by Jungle Express)
is off to a fine start. He finished his 2yo season with two seconds in two starts, the last being in the Indiana Stallion S. at Hoosier Park on 21Nov-04. He banked $12,000 last year.

Assigned the extreme outside post number ten in his 2005 debut at Philly Park, and was basically outrun as a 7/2 choice. Throw that one out. A better post and a smaller field of maidens is all that this one needs.

He is trained by Kathleen A. Demasi, 04-05 record: 567-63-68-59, stabled at Philly.

This is the second FAST FERDIE runner produced from his dam, and two other mares by Jungle Express also dropped foals from that sire, including his best runner, SHEZA PRETTY GAL.
